FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, August 10, 2011: In communications with the school board and Speegleville staff members this afternoon, Midway ISD Superintendent Dr. Brad Lancaster announced plans to relocate students and staff from Speegleville Elementary to River Valley Intermediate in the wake of an Aug. 10 fire.
Dr. Lancaster explained that River Valley had the most available space, closest location, and since the campus already houses the older siblings of Speegleville students, parents have relationships and confidence in the River Valley staff and administration.
“This was a carefully considered decision,” said Lancaster. “We evaluated all campus options, and chose the best option available. We will continue to examine the ramifications of adding 250 students and staff to this building, such as lack of age appropriate playground equipment, bathroom needs of younger students, and daily schedules. In the meantime, Principals Christopher Eberlein and Sarah Holland met to review the facilities, floor plans and class schedules, and they believe they have most of the hurdles addressed.”
On Thursday, the school board will approve a restoration company, and the selected company will provide timelines for cleaning materials and equipment from Speegleville. Taking into account the restoration timeline, Lancaster and Eberlein will meet with the Speegleville staff on Friday to review plans for a move in, give instructions for ordering for equipment and supplies, and how to handle upcoming events such as Meet the Teacher Night.
The fact that we will be able to keep all of our students and staff together at one campus is extremely valuable” said Eberlein. “We will be able to retain our close team and family atmosphere despite the temporary relocation.”
